THE NEW YORK TIMES

“…[A] handsome, witty new production of ‘The Lion in Winter’…The cast, ably directed by Paul Mullins, makes the 800-year-old characters both believable and relatable. Richard (Tom Pelphrey), one of the songs, and Philip, King of France (Sean Hudock), even have a nascent gay romance.”

REVIEWS

TALKIN BROADWAY
Sean Hudock deftly captures the gradually revealed strength of young Philip. Hudock’s boy monarch at first fools Henry into thinking of him as callow. However it isn’t long until he reveals that he is a fearsome foe without removing the smile from his face.

NJ ARTS MAVEN/ NEWS RECORDER
“…[The Lion In Winter] is getting the royal treatment at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey… but when the slimy, sniveling Phillip (played splendidly by Sean Hudock) betrays Richard, his injured response is worthy of our feeling of compassion.

EXAMINER
“It is an outstanding drama of great wit, and an even more outstanding cast led by Lisa Harrow as Eleanor of Aquitaine (Ms Harrow is a former member of England’s Royal Shakespeare Company) and Sherman Howard as a very regal Henry II. The sons are played by: (Daytime Emmy Award-winner) Tom Pelphrey in the role of Richard Lionheart, the eldest son of Eleanor and Henry II; Devin Norik plays Geoffrey, the middle son, and Colby Chambers plays John, the youngest son. Rounding out the marvelous cast are Sean Hudock in the role of young Phillip, the King of Franceand Laura Campbell in the role of Alais, Phillip’s sister and lover of Henry.”

CURTAIN UP
“With this production it is Paul Mullins’ dramatically compelling direction and seven excellent performances that vividly bring this choice bit of medieval squabbling to life… indeed cunning, but perhaps not quite as cunningly deceptive as was Sean Hudock as Philip.”
